It wasn't hard to think of several more, for all ages.

For teens there is Daddy Long-Legs, by Jean Webster. I reviewed this one once before, so you can read more about it here. Then there is Karen Hesse's Letters from Rifka, about a twelve-year-old girl fleeing Russia with her family in 1919. Rifka knows that her letters will never reach her cousin, whom she is writing to, so this book is more like a diary than a true epistolary novel, but I thought it worth including here anyway. And for a more modern version of the epistolary style, there is the TTYL series by Lauren Myracle. These books (TTYL, TTFN, and L8R G8R) are written entirely as a series of instant message conversations between three teen girls.

There are a few selections for middle-grade readers, as well, including P.S. Longer Letter Later and Snail Mail No More, both by Paula Danziger and Ann M. Martin; Dear Mr. Henshaw, the Newbery winner by Beverly Cleary; and the Regarding the... series by Kate Klise. The latter is a little different in that the books include things like newspaper clippings among the letters.

And lastly, I even found an epistolary picture book--two, actually: Dear Mrs. LaRue and LaRue for Mayor, by Mark Teague, which are composed of letters from a dog to his owner.

I'm sure there are more--let me know if you've read others! I love to write letters, which is probably why these books have such appeal for me; I'm dreaming of the day when I can exchange long, witty letters with anonymous Englishmen who send me books and invite me to visit their country and stay with their family or the old woman next door. A girl can dream, right?

Books about words (and how to use them!)

I'll admit, I am a word nerd. And a grammar fiend. And a spelling... whatever. I like it all. I've read and loved Eats, Shoots and Leaves (Lynne Truss) cover to cover, as well as Woe Is I: The Grammarphobes Guide to Better English in Plain English (Patricia T. O'Conner), and David Crystal's By Hook or By Crook (a fascinating, humorous look at the English language). I've even read bits of Strunk and White's Elements of Style for fun.

So over the last year or so I've been delighted to see several similar books written for children. First we have two more books by Lynne Truss: Twenty-Odd Ducks: Why, Every Punctuation Mark Counts! and The Girl's Like Spaghetti: Why, You Can't Manage Without Apostrophes! Along the same lines, I recently checked in a book at the store called Greedy Apostrophe: A Cautionary Tale. This should be required reading for anyone who ever writes in the English language--it's funny and it gets the point across. I told my family about this one, and now my younger brothers will see a typo and say, "Is that a greedy apostrophe?"

On a slightly different note, we got a book in a few weeks ago called The Word Snoop (Ursula Dubosarsky). This is a book all about the English language. It starts by telling about the alphabet (how it all began) and the invention of printing; moves forward through American spelling, punctuation, anagrams and pangrams and all sorts of other "grams," oxymorons, Pig Latin, onomatopoeia, tongue twisters, euphemisms, spoonerisms, malapropisms, and more; and ends with a look at "text-speak" and smileys. Everything is explained in a fun, easy-to-understand manner.

Summer Books

What are you reading this summer? I started The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn this weekend--figured it was a good book to start on the 4th of July. Others I've enjoyed during the last couple months include The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows) and The Help (Kathryn Stockett).

Last week I finally got around to reading this year's Newbery winner, The Graveyard Book (Neil Gaiman). I liked it a lot--more than I thought I would, actually, given the title. (I know, I know, you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover! But really, who doesn't?) So I'd recommend that for the age 10-12 crowd--although, be warned, the first chapter is scary.

For the slightly younger set, there's a new Alvin Ho book (written by Lenore Look) called Alvin Ho: Allergic to Camping, Hiking, and Other Natural Disasters. I haven't read an Alvin Ho book before, but I've heard they're good, and this one sounds like the perfect thing to read during the summer!

And for teens, The Hunger Games is exciting and action-packed, while Thirteen Reasons Why (Jay Asher) is more mysterious and pensive and reveals the impact (whether negative or positive) that people can have on others without realizing it; even what seems like the most harmless action has consequences.

BookExpo America 2009 (part 3)

After breakfast we went down to the children's trade show floor to explore the publisher booths and stand in line for book signings. I actually took this picture on Thursday, when they were still setting up, so it doesn't really do justice to how it looked on Friday. But it should give you an idea, anyway--books everywhere, and then way down at the end of the room (all the way to the left of the picture) the lines for book signings. Friday mostly went like this: Walk down an aisle of booths looking at cool things. Stand in line. Get a signed book from a famous author. Stand in line. Get a signed book from a not-so-famous author. Stand in line. Get a signed book from a famous author. Walk down another aisle of booths, looking at more cool things. Check a bag or two so our backs don't break. Repeat.
That's Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry. They signed Peter and the --- for me. I also got a Mercy Watson book signed by Kate DiCamillo, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society signed by Annie Barrows, and Catching Fire (the sequel to The Hunger Games) by Suzanne Collins, among others. Someone interviewed me while I was in line for Catching Fire. I don't know what that was for. (So if you happen to hear me on the radio or something, let me know, OK?)

To end the day, Karlene and I went to a party/reception thing at Workman Publishing. There we made a dinner out of lots of little elegant hor d'ouevre-type things, and also picked up a couple more books. The food was probably the fanciest food I've ever had--or at least the most sophisticated. Fancy Nancy would have loved it. I couldn't decide whether to feel sophisticated because I was at this very grown-up party, or just out of place because I'd never experienced that sort of thing before.

Around 7 or 8 PM we made our way back to the hotel, collected all of our bags (we had each checked three by that point), and started for home. I am quite enjoying having so many new books to read; I was reading one a day for the first few days, but have been slowed by Little Bird of Heaven, by Joyce Carol Oates. (It is pretty long, and too sad to read for long periods of time.)

Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed seeing BEA through my eyes. I had a great time, and I hope I'll be able to go back sometime! I'd never seen so many books in one place before; and we hardly broke the surface of what there was to see and do--but what we did see and do was awesome! (If you'd like more information--or a less anecdotal, more informational summary of the weekend--you can visit bookexpoamerica.com or search the web for other bloggers' takes on the event.)

BookExpo America 2009 (part 2)

I was actually a little worried about seeing Julie Andrews, because, you know, what if she wasn't practically perfect in every way like Mary Poppins? I needn't have worried. She was. She was the emcee for the event, so she spoke first and then introduced the others. She opened with some jokes about the early hour (8:00 AM), saying "Wouldn't it have been lovely if this had been a pajama party, and we could have all just rolled out of bed to come? I feel almost as if I did." After talking a bit about her writing, especially the book she most recently co-wrote with her daughter, Julie Andrews' Collection of Poems, Songs, and Lullabies (available in October), she introduced a surprise guest: Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary)! He sang "Day Is Done" (to usher in the day), and encouraged us to sing along, scolding us for singing "meekly."
Meg Cabot spoke next. She showed old family photos ("Doesn't it look like I was raised by the Mod Squad?! Seriously.") and spoke about when she first met Julie Andrews, at the premiere for the Princess Diaries movie, and how nervous she was even though "of course she's totally adorable in person!" She also shared her three rules to live by:
1. Never pass a bathroom without going in, because you never know when you'll find another one.
2. Treat people the way you want to be treated.
3. Never give up.

Up next was Tomie DePaola. It's a novel experience for me to have heard someone famous speak on more than one occasion, and this was my third time hearing Tomie, so I took some satisfaction from the fact that he told a story I'd heard him tell before: When he was little he said, "When I grow up, I'm going to draw pictures for books and tap-dance on stage." He has, in fact, been paid for both. He also shared a story about when his alma mater gave him an honorary doctorate in art. Judy Collins was there, and before she did anything else, she said, "All right! I'm going to get this out of the way!" and sang--mesmerizing everyone. "So," Tomie said, "I'm just going to get this out of the way," and he broke into "The hills are alive with the sound of music!"

Amy Krouse Rosenthal began by showing us this video, which is worth watching if you have a few minutes. She organized her presentation as a Q&A, because, she said, she always had a million questions growing up. One of her questions (at the breakfast, not as a child) was, "Can you believe we're all here with JULIE ANDREWS?!" At which point she brought out a favorite from her music box collection. Setting it on the podium, she bent the microphone down so we could all hear it play "Chim Chimeny" from Mary Poppins. Amy seemed like a very interesting person. She loves words and wordplay--she's probably excellent at Scrabble--and then there's that video.

Part Three coming soon...

BookExpo America 2009 (part 1)

Last weekend was a very exciting one for me--Karlene and I went to NYC for BookExpo America! I'd been looking forward to this ever since I found out Julie Andrews would be there, and it didn't disappoint.

We left CT on Thursday morning and arrived in the city in time to check into our hotel room and get hot dogs in front of the Javits Center for lunch before attending a couple of educational sessions with hundreds of other booksellers and librarians. After these we went back to the hotel, changed into sneakers, and set off to find a bookstore. At this point it was raining--not hard, but enough that we were pretty wet by the time we got to our destination--where we discovered that the store had very unusual hours, none of which included the hour we were there. There was, however, a nice little Austrian restaurant across the street, so we had a delicious dinner and warmed up a little before heading back out into the rain. That night, after watching a little bit of the National Spelling Bee on TV (I had no idea that was how to pronounce blancmange!), we attended a reception for Avin Dominitz, who is apparently a brilliant man, and huge in the world of bookselling. I'd never heard of him before that day (although he did lead the session on handselling that I attended), but it was a neat experience nonetheless.

(This is the view from our hotel room. We were on the 17th floor.)

Friday morning we woke up at 5:15 and were out the door around 6:00, heading back to the Javits Center. We were able to take the subway part of the way, but then it was four long blocks of walking in the rain--which turned into eight blocks because we walked two before realizing we were going the wrong direction. (Yep. We're good like that.) We shot envious glances at a man with an umbrella large enough for four and received a pitying look in return. Finally we arrived and found the booth where we could get tickets to get signed books by some of the more famous authors. They'd run out of Julie Andrews tickets at 6:30, but we were able to get a few others--Dave Barry & Ridley Pearson, Joyce Carol Oates, and Suzanne Collins. At this point I would have also liked a booth handing out towels with which to dry my feet, but I quickly forgot my discomfort in light of the fact that it was time for the Children's Author Breakfast with Julie Andrews, Tomie DePaola, Meg Cabot, and Amy Krouse Rosenthal!

Part Two coming soon...

Don't Let the Pigeon Be the Principal!

If you're a fan of the Pigeon books by Mo Willems, take a few minutes to watch this video put together by the first grade class of Parkview Elementary. The first one I pulled out of the box was Nana Cracks the Case!, by Kathleen Lane. The back cover reads, "Nanas, you see, are not supposed to become backhoe operators or marine biologists or circus performers (actually Nana did not join the circus, she only substituted while the trapeze artist recovered from a broken leg), and they must never--because they are so very fragile, you see--become detectives." Tell me you don't want to read the book now! I sure do. It even has a reversible cover, "perfect for sneaky detective work!"

The next one was called Escape Under the Forever Sky, by Eve Yohalem. It's about a girl who is the daughter of the American ambassador to Ethiopia, and she gets kidnapped. It is apparently based on a true story, and looks riveting. (I read a few pages in the middle. Now I want to read the whole thing.)

Finally, for you fans of Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Jen Corace, a book called Little Oink. Both dog and girl are lonely, with no one in particular to call a friend, until they meet one rainy night. Amy Hest tells their story in an interesting parallel fashion--a bit about the dog, a bit about the girl, and so on until their paths cross. There's nothing really surprising about the plot, but it's the kind of story I would enjoy reading to a child on a rainy day while curled up on a comfy chair with a blanket and maybe some homemade cookies fresh out of the oven. A sweet and cozy kind of book.

Happy Birthday, Paddington!

Paddington Bear turns 50 today! In the hush of the forest a lone yellow leaf clung to the branch of a great oak tree." So begins Carin Berger's story of The Little Yellow Leaf. This leaf is afraid to fall like all the other leaves. He insists he's "not ready," as the autumn passes and snow falls. But then he notices another leaf, a little red leaf, still hanging on just like him, and together they are finally able to let go.

I think the reason I like this story so much is because I can so relate to that little yellow leaf, feeling like I'm not ready. And I know the reassurance that comes of finding a friend who feels the same way. But I can also imagine not liking this book if it weren't so well done--if the text were not as gentle or the illustrations so original. I love that mixed-media style--cut paper and paint and probably some materials I don't know enough to identify--and I love how these illustrations capture the feel of fall and early winter.

Nancy Elizabeth Wallace

We were pleased to have Nancy Elizabeth Wallace visit us last week. We met lots of authors and got lots of free books and generally had a fabulous time!

The trade show was held at the Hynes Convention Center, which is connected to the Sheraton hotel and a very large mall. (Actually, the whole place was very large. I probably would have gotten lost really easily had I been by myself!) Our room at the Sheraton was on the twelfth floor, and I enjoyed watching the people on the streets below and imagining about them (which I think had something to do with my being surrounded by authors and books.)
The highlights of the first day revolved around meals. We had both the Awards Luncheon and the Children's Book Dinner. The authors who spoke at lunch (and complimentary copies of whose books we received) included Alice Hoffman, Nathaniel Philbrick, Tomie dePaola, and David Macaulay. Tomie dePaola was a definite treat--he had the room of booksellers mesmerized by his reading of one of the stories from his book, Front Porch Tales & North Country Whoppers.

After lunch we went to a couple of workshops, and soon it was time for dinner. I'd been looking forward to this dinner ever since I knew we were going, because two of my favorite authors were to attend--Jeanne Birdsall, author of The Penderwicks andThe Penderwicks on Gardam Street; and Norton Juster, author of, among other things, The Phantom Tollbooth, which is one of my family's favorites! What I didn't know until that day was that our friends at Scholastic had invited us to sit at one of their tables--the very table at which Norton Juster was seated!

Here is a shot of the table (note the SweetTarts and rubber ducks and more free books!):And here, to my delight, are Mr. Juster and I!
As an icebreaker, we had a little children's book trivia game. There were two envelopes on each table--one marked "question," one with "answer." The question one had the first lines of two children's books, and we had to guess what books they were from. I am proud to report that I knew more of the answers than anyone else at the table. We traded twice with other tables, so we guessed at a total of six first lines, and I knew three of them--The Book Thief, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and The Secret Garden. Other people knew one or two--Karlene got Hoot. Needless to say, I loved this game.

Day #2: The trade show itself!
Basically, our second day consisted of walking around and talking to vendors and finding new things to share with all of you. (We got some really fun reading glasses... plaid and animal print and striped and solid.) At 1:00 we started lining up for more signed books, and by 3:30 we were happily laden with books and ready for lunch! After lunch it was time for another workshop or two, and then the Author Reception, where we got, you guessed it, more books! An animated one? I guess I'm a little out of the loop, because I didn't know about it until I checked all these books in. We have a Clone Wars Galactic Photobook, Clone Wars chapter books for two different levels, two early-reader books (levels 1 and 2), an activity book, a sticker book, a picture book, and The Clone Wars: The Visual Guide! Simply put, a booknap is when you read until you fall asleep. The article states, "If you set your book or magazine aside, rolled over and slept you have not booknapped. The experience should be seamless. One moment you are reading sleepily, the next you wake up with messy hair and a strange taste in your mouth." Like I said, this is not something I have ever experienced.

I remember once hearing an aunt say that she had fallen asleep while reading, and wondering how that was possible. I just can't let go of a story (even if I've read it many times before) enough to fall asleep in the middle. Am I missing out? Moss's gentle prose follows Billy Bear through the evening as his mother gets him ready for bed and then goes to her pottery class, leaving him with a friend. He can't sleep, and goes downstairs, telling the babysitter he is worried his mother won't be able to find her way home in the dark. She reassures him, showing him the streetlights and the moon and stars, and he goes to sleep. Nothing groundbreaking, but the story would help to get a child comfortable with the idea of going to bed without Mom.

Spring Events

We have a number of fun events coming up at The Alphabet Garden!

The first is our Teachers Only Night on May 21st from 6:00-8:00 PM. One day a mouse comes for a visit. Bear tells him he is against the rule--no visitors allowed! The mouse, however, is persistent. Finally Bear gives in to the mouse's request for a fire in the fireplace and a cup of tea--on the condition that the mouse leave immediately after. But Bear is in for a surprise. The mouse compliments his fire and his headstand skills and laughs at his jokes! Suddenly visitors don't seem like such a bad idea, after all. The noble mouse, however, is determined to hold up his end of the bargain by leaving right away.

"Don't go!" wailed Bear, throwing his body across the path.
"But I gave you my word," said the mouse, pointing at the "No Visitors" sign.
"Oh, that!" cried Bear, pulling down the sign and tearing it up. "That's for salesmen. Not for friends."
And... they all lived happily ever after.

I don't think there is anything about this book I don't like. It would be fun to read aloud, exaggerating Bear's comically dramatic responses to finding the mouse, yet again, in his house. And the illustrations are lovely--large, simple, warm and homey.

Best suited for ages 2-5.

Puffin Classics

Looking for a classic? The book is basically a parody of children's classics. Think Hansel and Gretel combined with Mary Poppins and The Bobbsey Twins, with references to Heidi, James and the Giant Peach, and Jane Eyre, just to name a few. It comes complete with a tongue-in-cheek glossary and bibliography. The entry for Mary Poppins states:
Mary Poppins is not at all like the cheerful, spritely movie person played by Julie Andrews. She is a stern, cross, vain and mysterious nanny who arrives on the wind at the home of the Banks family in London to care for their four children... Ms. Poppins does not sing, ever, and would not like being portrayed as someone who did.

So true.

For the Parents Who Are Best at Everything!

Mom and Dad are no longer left out of the fun. The whole book is written in the form of letters from an orphan girl to her anonymous benefactor, the man who is paying her way to college. She only caught a brief glimpse of him once, so all she knows of him is that he is tall. And rich. And she has been told he doesn't like girls. As her repayment for his generosity, she is ordered to write him a letter every month, to which she should not expect a response. Knowing so little of him, least of all his name, she has some trouble coming up with a name to address her letters to:

I suppose I might call you Dear Mr. Girl-Hater. Only that's sort of insulting to me. Or Dear Mr. Rich-Man, but that's insulting to you, as though money were the only important thing about you. Besides, being rich is such a very external quality. Maybe you won't stay rich all your life; lots of very clever men get smashed up in Wall Street. But at least you will stay tall all your life! So I've decided to call you Dear Daddy-Long-Legs.
It is a very enjoyable book, witty and sweet. We don't currently have it in stock here at The Alphabet Garden, but we can order it and have it in a few days if anyone is interested.

What are you reading these days? "I like you because..." the book begins, and lists reason after reason, ending finally with "I guess I just like you because I like you."

Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls: Moving Day

Meg Cabot has written a lot of books (The Princess Diaries are her most famous, but there are many more). You'd think eventually she'd run out of funny things to say, and her books would go downhill, but for now she seems to be going strong.

Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls: Moving Day is her first book for middle-grade readers. The protagonist is a nine-year-old girl who likes rules, because, as she explains, "Rules help make our lives easier. For instance, the rule about not killing people. Obviously, this is a good rule." What she doesn't like so much is the fact that her family is moving. Having to move to a different place makes everything seem unstable, so she makes a list of rules to compensate. Rules make the world seem sturdier--even rules as simple as "Rule #1: Don't stick a spatula down your best friend's throat."

I know there are plenty of books out there for the grades 4-6 reading level about moving, but I especially liked this one because I found Allie so easy to relate to. I remember being nine. I also remember moving when I was seven. It all felt pretty much like Meg Cabot describes it through Allie Finkle's eyes.

What To Do About Alice?

(Written by Barbara Kerley and illustrated by Edwin Fotheringham.)

I like it.

I like the subject. I didn't remember much about Alice Roosevelt from history lessons before I read this book tonight, but she seems a very interesting person. Now I want to know more.

I like the writing. Take this part: "Her mother had died in 1884, two days after Alice was born. Father was sad. Everyone was sad for Alice. But she didn't remember her mother. She did not want to grow up hearing them say, 'the poor little thing!' It's always nice when a book lives up to the expectation generated by a nice cover, as this one does. Narrated by a dragon, it tells the story of how he meets a Benjamin and takes it to school one day, to the curiosity of all the other dragons. The Benjamin explains to the dragons about his home, and even teaches them a very strange game--soccer! Eventually, though, he has to go home. His dragon friend takes him home--the other dragons are all too scared--and returns with more surprising details of the strange world of the Benjamins.

2008 Award Winners

This morning the American Library Association announced its award winners for 2008!

The John Newbery Medal winner is Good Masters! Her illustrations have such a simple, happy style; they make me want to get out lots of fabric scraps and pretty papers and markers and go to town with them.

Recently Lauren Child has added her touch to a classic children's book: Pippi Longstocking, by Astrid Lindgren. Her illustrations are the perfect match for this peppy tale of an odd little girl with braids that stick out who lives with a horse and a monkey and only decides to go to school because she wants to have school vacations.

This gorgeous edition of Pippi Longstocking is a great gift idea for girls of almost any age. I know, I just posted about this one, but to reiterate: I find this reminiscent of The Velveteen Rabbit, but less abstract. A fairy doesn't appear to make Edward real, but he does realize that even after having lost everyone he loved, it is still worth it to love again. (OK, that sounds cliché, but really. It's a lovely book.) Edward Tulane is aimed at grades 4-6.

The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, tells the story of a German girl during World War II. The book is written from the perspective of Death, which sounds weird, but works well. Zusak writes with powerful descriptions: "A single hour can consist of thousands of different colors. Waxy yellows, cloud-spat blues. Murky darknesses." (and that's only the 4th page.) As he writes, "It's just a small story really, about, among other things: *A girl *Some words *An accordionist *Some fanatical Germans *A Jewish fist fighter *And quite a lot of thievery." The Book Thief has been marketed to teens, but it was one of my mom's favorite books of 2007, as well.

While we're on the subject, Tamar, by Mal Peet, is another good World War II book for teens. The story alternates between the 1940's and the present day as a girl uncovers the mystery of her grandfather's past.

The Mysterious Benedict Society, by Trenton Lee Stewart, is a bit hard to describe. Four children, some very tricky tests, a villain bent on taking over the world, plot twists and dry humor add up to an eminently enjoyable tale. (Grades 7-9, give or take.)

Edward's Eyes, by Patricia MacLachlan. It's a tear-jerker, I admit. But first it's a story of family and summer sun and neighborhood baseball and old family friends, with a little James Taylor thrown in. (Grades 4-6.)

Solomon Snow and the Silver Spoon, by Kaye Umansky. The first word that comes to mind to describe this book is "Dickensian," as it is set in turn-of-the-century London, with orphans and a chimney sweep and names that betray their characters' personalities (who else could Miss Starch be but a prim schoolteacher?). However, I don't think I've ever laughed out loud at a Dickens novel. I did at Solomon Snow. (Grades 4-6.)

So there you have it. (A select few of) my favorites of the grades 4-and-up books I read in 2007. This is a story similar to The Velveteen Rabbit in that it is about a toy rabbit, love, and loss. However, I think that The Velveteen Rabbit can be rather abstract and not always easy to understand, while Edward Tulane is more straightforward and equally beautiful.

All three are now available at The Alphabet Garden. Call (203) 439-7766 to reserve a copy!

The Thirteenth Tale

Wow. I'd heard a few of you exclaim over The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield, but wasn't quite convinced until Karlene offered to lend it to me and it hooked me after the first page. I'm not sure it would matter to me what this author was writing about--it's the rhythm of her phrases and unexpected word choices that really make the book. Like this sentence: "The monotonous fragment of a tune was scratching at my brain." How can you not love a book with sentences like that?

The plot is wonderful, too. It kept me guessing right up to the end, and after I finished reading I was tempted to go straight back to the beginning to pick up details I missed the first time.

Have you read any great books lately? At 8 PM we will draw the winner of the Julie Albright American Girl doll.

Plan to come and enjoy the festivities with us!

Happy Birthday, Hilary Knight!

Hilary Knight, the illustrator of Kay Thompson's Eloise books, as well as many others, turns 81 today.

The Daring Book for Girls

It has finally arrived--the girl version of The Dangerous Book for Boys!
